Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich

Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH) is one of the leading international universities for technology and the natural sciences. Founded in 1855, ETH Zurich today has some 18,000 students from over 100 different countries, 3,800 of whom are doctoral students. About 500 professors currently teach and conduct research in the areas of engineering, architecture, mathematics, natural sciences, system-oriented sciences, and management and social sciences.

The Wood Materials Science group is affiliated to the Institute for Building Materials at ETH Zurich and the Applied Wood Materials lab at Empa Duebendorf. Our main research focus is on plant cell wall structure and properties as well as the utilization of the plant material. For cell and cell wall analysis we utilize micromechanical testing, Raman microscopy, Atomic force microscopy and Scanning near-field optical microscopy. Besides nanostructural, topochemical and micromechanical characterization we are interested in transferring design principles of plant cell walls into technical application by developing bio-inspired materials.
